For years, the General Motors plant in Lordstown, OH offered high paying jobs, good benefits and a pension plan, but after continued decline in demand for the plant’s signature sedans, GM recently shuttered the facility. How can other communities protect themselves from this fate?

GM employees in Lordstown and other factories in Michigan and Maryland that are targeted to close within a year say moving will force them to leave behind relatives, even their children, in some cases.

So how can a community protect itself from this fate? How do you fortify a workforce so it can transition to a different job or “upskill” to a more advanced one? These are the “middle-skill jobs,” and workers who step up their education and training will snag them at the same time the low-skilled jobs go away. Those who do not, will simply be out of contention.that in 2015, middle-skill jobs accounted for a whopping 53% of the U.S. labor market. Sadly, only 43% of the country’s workers were even trained to the middle-skill level.
