Caigan and Cassie Crabtree are breaking records on the softball diamond. Erin Smith is balancing raising a newborn with patrolling the touchline.
Melissa softball player Caigan Crabtree stands with her mother and Melissa softball coach Cassie Crabtree outside the Melissa High School Championship Center, Wednesday, May 8, 2024, in Dallas. Her mother, Cassie Crabtree, was the softball coach at Forney while pregnant with her. Crabtree didn’t know if Caigan, now a junior at Melissa, would share her interest in the sport, let alone play at an elite level.
Just as Caigan was on the softball field before her birth, Ellie was on the soccer pitch before hers. Smith still coached from the sidelines during Marcus’s playoff run in the late stages of her pregnancy.“I know it’s hard to believe because I was so pregnant, but I would sometimes just forget that I was that far along,” she said. “I was in my groove on the sideline.
But it also has its drawbacks. Caigan said she feels like she has to prove that her standing on the team isn’t just because she’s Crabtree’s daughter.“She’s harder on me than anyone else, but I also love it like that because I know that she just wants what’s best for me,” Caigan said.“My favorite memories are when she hits a home run and she’s coming around third. We do a little high-five at the bottom, and see her smile on her face,” Crabtree said.
