Over a seven-month shoot of very long days, the cast leaned greatly on one another—learning the ins and outs of the profession they’d be dedicating themselves to, down to actual high-speed driving tests. “We were doing some crazy stuff in empty parking lots in Atlanta,” Mara says. “It’s like we went through our own version of Actors Quantico.
Understanding those mechanics takes work, so Smith brought on Williams as a consultant to oversee the authenticity of the series. He read a bunch of books. He spoke with a range of agents, up to the FBI’s deputy director, and was shown “pretty much everything” he asked to see at Quantico, even as he asked tough questions. “Their cases were almost like books—they weren’t, as we’ve seen in television, compressed into a quick fix,” he says.
The first thing you’ll notice while watching, surely, is the actors aged a decade-plus up. The process took time: versions of the prosthetics that felt like too much, then too little. The final design found Mara in the makeup chair, starting out, for three hours a day, just to get into character; seven months in, the team could cut that daily routine to 90 minutes at best. Mara acquits herself well in the many temporal shifts, even as it was new territory for her.
