The latest “Animal Crossing” came out just as the pandemic made real life a lot less palatable than fake life

Laura Smykla had a bunch of errands to run on Glenorchy, the island where she and her husband are riding out the pandemic. Besides tidying up the floral landscaping and adding new fencing around her house, she visited a general store run by a pair of raccoons.

There was no need to wear a mask. Glenorchy exists only in the life-simulation videogame “Animal Crossing: New Horizons.” Nintendo Co. introduced the latest version of its wildly successful Animal Crossing franchise on March 20—just in time for the coronavirus pandemic...
