Featuring a tremendous performance from Gael García Bernal, the film depicts a lucha libre icon who defied the odds. The filmmaker behind it knew just how to tell that story.
How did you think about artistic license? You knew Cassandro; he was obviously involved in your preproduction work, and you’d done a documentary about him, but making a narrative film is a little different. You can’t include everything. Where was that line for you?
As a documentarian, I had to let go of a lot. I could have just held on to the facts so hard that it would’ve impeded the creative arc of the film. I would’ve been trying to put too much in there and add too much detail of Cassandro’s life, so I had to let go. I think great directing is about letting go. I learned that in the Lab—I had a lot more in there that I had to let go. I’d be like, Well, the real Cassandro wouldn’t do that. Also, I let Gael own the role.
Yeah, creating the character. And you write the film in the edit room; you have to let go of a lot of stuff in the edit room. Once I focused on thisof the movie, which is about self-love and everything serving that journey to self-acceptance, then anything that didn’t match that, I let go. I put a lot of my personal story in it. The story of being in thefamily, that was from me. My mother was the other woman, and we would go and spy on my father. We would sit outside of where we knew he’d be.
