It is a common air pollutant that can enter the brain through the nose.

Their pioneering study exposed mice and human neuronal cells in the lab to toxic air pollution particles to understand their role in the development of Alzheimer’s disease.have a genetic origin, the environment and lifestyle choices seem to have a major impact on the disease,” says Associate Professor Gunawan.

“However, this is the first study to look at whether the presence of magnetite particles in the brain can indeed lead to signs of Alzheimer’s,” she said.During the four-month study, both healthy and genetically susceptible mice were exposed to iron, magnetite, and diesel hydrocarbons. Magnetite consistently mirrored Alzheimer’s pathologies like loss of essential brain cells, buildup of amyloid plaque, and increased stress, anxiety, and short-term memory impairment in the exposed mice.

“We breathe in these particles, and they have the troubling ability to enter the brain through our nasal passages, sidestepping the protective blood-brain barrier,” she added. In both mice and human cells, magnetite triggered an immune response, leading to inflammation and oxidative stress, which contribute to dementia. “Magnetite seems to cause neurodegeneration even in healthy mice, a concerning finding,” says Dr. Charlotte Fleming, co-author of the study.
