Amy Giddon was commuting to her consulting client by subway in New York City in 2016 and was inspired by a wall of Post It notes to start Daily Haloha.

Yes. What struck me was what’s working to unite us with anonymous strangers in the physical world is pretty much the opposite of what has been proven to silence and often separate us in the digital world.

I saw the potential for a digital experience that was quite unlike what’s happening in social media, one that made experiences like Subway Therapy available to everyone everywhere. That’s what really set me on the path to developing the mobile app, Daily Haloha. The way we’re defining the problem is that our sense of well-being has eroded over the years, and at its core is a loss of connection.

As a consultant, I cared deeply about my clients’ success. But I wasn’t accountable for that success. It surprised me when I wanted to create this start-up, because it was nothing I ever wanted to do or planned to do. The only reason I did it is because I had an idea that I felt had to be brought to life. And the only way to see it be created and live in the world was to do it myself. So, I did. But it challenged me on so many levels. There were many things that I had to learn.

One of the really interesting learnings I had about myself along the way is how hooked I was previously on feedback: from my clients, from my bosses, from anyone frankly. As an entrepreneur of a start-up there was no one telling me I was doing a good job. And I felt a little lost for a while because of that. And I never realized how motivated I was in my career by not just doing a good job, but being told I was doing a good job.
