Gun buybacks make little impact, crime experts say, but Houston officials say any change is worth it
Mayor Sylvester Turner has argued the events are worthwhile if the city can take just one gun off the streets that would have been used for a crime, suicide or accidental injury. The $1 million buyback program is part of the mayor's $53 million, with larger sums allotted for officer overtime, expanded teams to respond to domestic abuse and mental health crises, and other efforts.
The rewards vary depending on the type of gun: $50 for nonfuctioning firearms; $100 for rifles and shotguns; $105 for handguns; and $200 for assault-style weapons. Saturday's edition will have more than one line and will forbid so-called"ghost guns." The Third Ward event had one line that stretched for miles, and one resident 3D printed 60 ghost guns to cash in on the reward.
