A win by Molly Cook or Texas Rep. Jarvis Johnson may be short-lived — both are back on the ballot on May 28 for the Democratic primary runoff.

Emergency room nurse Molly Cook took an early lead Saturday in the special election to finish the remaining term of former state Sen. John Whitmire , who stepped down from the state Legislature four months ago to become the mayor of Houston . Cook led state Rep. Jarvis Johnson , also a Democrat, with about 55% of the early and mail-in vote. At 9 p.m., Harris County had not yet reported any Election Day totals.

Both candidates are back on the ballot on May 28 for the Democratic primary runoff, and a Saturday victory could give one of them a bump in their final three weeks on the campaign trail.
