A man from Houston remains in custody for federal hate crime charges after being accused of using the Grindr app to mislead and assault a transgender woman.
Alhemoud allegedly used Grindr, a social media app for members of the LGBTQ community, to set up a date Aug. 29 with the transgender victim at her apartment. Once Alhemoud arrived, he pulled out a gun and demanded her money and property. She didn't have any cash to give Alhemoud, so he hit her with his pistol and stomped on her face and chest, according to the charges.
A federal grand jury returned the three-count indictment Oct. 26. At a detention hearing after Alhemoud's arrest, he was determined to be a danger to the community and ordered into custody pending further criminal proceedings. If convicted, he faces up to life in prison.
