What does the Houston hosting the Final Four mean for local businesses?

When Houston hosted the Final Four in 2011, the city collected $38 million in sales tax that April, nearly $2 million more than 2010. But that was far less than the $47.6 million collected in April 2013 .

When Houston staged the event in April 2011, hotel occupancy tax revenues totaled more than $9.3 million. The tax collections that same month a year later eclipsed it by more than $3 million. Heckman, with Houston First, said a majority of the economic impact from the Final Four is expected to be felt by hotels, restaurants and bars. NRG Stadium seats more than 70,000, so organizers are expecting tens of thousands of visitors to converge in Houston.

Major sporting events, like the NCAA Final Four and the Super Bowl, generally keep details of the winning bids a closely held secret, so it is difficult to know what a community is obligated to provide. Houston won the right to host the Final Four in 2018, when the NCAA announced the winning host cities in a four-year cycle from 2023-26. Bid committees from Los Angeles and Detroit did not land events that cycle.
