House was set to vote on a proposal to ban certain semiautomatic firearms critics term 'assault weapons.'
Democrats described such firearms as “assault weapons” they say have no place in society.
Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Tyler, said the country has always had guns but he blamed recent violence on other factors, including the law enforcement policies of Democrats in charge of large urban areas. Rep. Sylvia Garcia, D-Houston, said she was raised on a South Texas farm and is a gun owner who knows how to use them for hunting game.
The National Rifle Association said addressing violent crime must start with a rejection of those who would “defund our police departments, support prosecutors who refuse to prosecute dangerous criminals, and promote no cash bail policies that have turned once proud communities into a playground of lawlessness and fear.”The bill already is a nonstarter in the Senate given stiff Republican opposition, but advocates for tighter gun restrictions welcomed its approval by the House.
Ultimately, the bill passed by an ultra-thin margin in a vote that fell almost entirely along partisan lines.Two of those Democratic “no” votes came from a pair of Texas moderates: Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Laredo, and Rep. Vicente Gonzalez, D-McAllen.
