The proposal by Rep. Joe Harding, R-Williston, which passed on a party-line vote of 69-47, pits the privacy rights of LGBTQ students against a parental right to control their children.

The proposal has drawn national attention, including a condemnation by President Biden, and is backed by Gov. Ron DeSantis. It comes as the governor and Legislature seek re-election later this year, with DeSantis positioning himself as the champion of conservative cultural issues.

"It's fair to parents, creating a level playing field to be able to assert themselves as a parent," he added. Critics have dubbed the measure the “Don’t Say Gay” bill because they said the failure to define “appropriate” or"instruction" will leave teachers fearing a lawsuit for providing an inappropriate answer to a student’s question.
