Rep. Troy Nehls of Texas says the Capitol Police photographed confidential documents in his office last year, but the agency insists it acted in response to an unsecured office door.
later Tuesday: The agency said its officers noticed an unnamed lawmaker’s office door was “wide open” on the same November weekend referenced by Nehls, and said its practice is to secure any unlocked and unoccupied offices on Capitol Hill to prevent theft.
The department also denied opening an investigation into the lawmaker or his staff, and said officers decided no investigation was necessary after following up with his staff days later.
