The House Republican Conference shot down a rule change put forward by Rep. Chip Roy that would have raised the threshold to advance a nominee for House speaker out of conference from a simple majority to 217.

With the proposed rule change shot down, the House could advance a candidate out of conference and bring them to the floor as early as today, as all it will take is a simple majority to advance a nominee out of conference.Rep. Steve Womack , who’s endorsed House Majority Leader Steve Scalise , made a motion to table the amendment and it passed, according to a source familiar.

This is a big win for Scalise and his supporters, who were against the rule change and actively whipping against it, while House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan and his supporters were for the rule change.
