A recent survey of how America's hospitals are handling the coronavirus crisis finds some hospitals trying to make their own disinfectant, running low on toilet paper and food, and trying to source face masks from nail salons.

She adds the federal government has taken steps to try to address this issue,"but when we talked to hospitals [in late March], they were still reporting that this was a serious challenge." Administrators were also concerned about having adequate staff to operate them."We had one hospital administrator say to us, you can make thousands of ventilators, but it will take an army to manage that equipment and to care for those patients," Maxwell says.[...] The scarcity of COVID-19 tests and length of time it took to get test results back meant presumptive positive patients greatly strained bed availability, [personal protective equipment] supplies, and staffing.
