BREAKING: Hong Kong indefinitely suspends debate on an extradition bill that triggered massive protests
HONG KONG — Hong Kong's Chief Executive Carrie Lam on Saturday announced the government will suspend debate on an extradition bill that"We decided that it was important to return society to peace," Lam told reporters, referring to the huge demonstrations. The climb down followed formal warnings from U.S.
Opponents said the bill would severely compromise their freedoms and erode Hong Kong's legal independence. Lam maintained the legislation is necessary and would have safeguards to ensure human rights are protected. Hong Kong, a semi-autonomous Chinese territory, enjoys greater freedoms than mainland China under a"one country, two systems" framework put in place in 1997. Residents can freely surf the internet and participate in public protests, unlike in the mainland.
