Police in Hong Kong have arrested high profile pro-democracy leaders as the city braces for the 13th weekend of anti-government demonstrations
A key deadline is approaching on October 1 with the 70th anniversary of the Communist Party takeover of China.
Commentators have expressed concern that the arrests will further inflame tensions. Pro-democracy demonstrator Joseph Cheng told: “It’s generally believed that the Carrie Lam administration is sort of cleaning up the mess, so to speak, as instructed by Xi Jinping. And she would like to bring the situation under control by the Oct. 1 National Day.
Some 900 people have been arrested during the protests, Hong Kong’s biggest political crisis since it was handed back to China by the British in 1997.
