Home carers to protest next week amid a row over their pay grade

The council ultimately decided not to change the grade of the job, meaning the workers would not receive a pay rise.

Arranged by union Unison, home carers across South Lanarkshire will protest at the council’s HQ on Wednesday, December 7, which will coincide with a fullThe protest stems from the result of a job evaluation carried out by the council. Carers had asked the local authority to re-evaluate the grade for the job due to the workers taking on more responsibility during Covid.

The union are not proposing a strike, but are hoping the council will listen and reassess its decision and grant home carers a higher pay.Kay McVeigh, head of personnel services at South Lanarkshire Council, said: “We hugely value the work undertaken by all of our staff and that is why we are committed to offering good terms and conditions.

“We have a clear process in place, developed with our trade unions, for occasions when any group requests a job evaluation.
