It's never a good sign when airlines start waiving change and cancellation fees already. Here's the latest weather outlook for NYC and across the country from StormTeam4NY

It stays dry and chilly today, then warms up a bit Wednesday and Thursday ahead of the next storm system, which is already putting a damper on holiday travel

Temperatures turn dangerously cold by Friday night, making for icy roads the morning of Christmas Eve; the mercury isn't expected to reach 30, even, Saturday or Sunday, so they'll stay that wayA number of airlines are already waiving change fees ahead of a powerful late-week storm expected to dump a mix of rain and snow on a swath of the country, punishing the New York area with whipping rains and rough winds before temperatures nosedive to dangerous cold.

We expect a dramatic, and potentially dangerous, temperature crash Friday afternoon. The city, for example, will be near 50 degrees at 3 p.m. Friday and plunge below freezing within three to four hours. Any wet surfaces, including roadways, could quickly turn to ice by the time many get on the road early Christmas Eve.

Airlines are preparing for the potential weather-related havoc. United Airlines issued an alert for the East Coast.
