After standing up against threats over banned books this summer, officials are planning to declare the city as a sanctuary against such bans.

Hoboken City Council President Emily Jabbour reads at the Hoboken Banned Book Read-a-Thon at Church Square Park on Saturday, June 17, 2023. In response to a nationwide push to ban books some deem inappropriate for children, Hoboken is hoping to go one step further by declaring the city a sanctuary for books in the crosshairs.

The Hoboken City Council is expected to vote Wednesday evening on a resolution declaring the Mile Square City a “book sanctuary,” where “no book shall be banned, endangered books shall be protected, and all types of books shall be made accessible to all without regard to their content.” If you purchase a product or register for an account through one of the links on our site, we may receive compensation.
