Deltiologist Larry Keddy noted that at one time, millions of postcards were going through the mail annually.More than a century ago, in 1900, the Canadian Kodak Company introduced a novelty — a camera made to produce postcard-size negatives. The camera sold for roughly $20.Within a few years, after the postcard format was changed by the post office, that figure had ballooned into the millions.
In the talk, Keddy referred to postcards as yesterday’s email, noting that their popularity began more than 150 years ago — in 1869 — when they were first introduced in Austria.HISTORICALLY SPEAKING WITH ED COLEMAN: Irish in your genes? Local writings help illuminate history Until 1895, Keddy said, only the post office was allowed to print mailable postcards. Selling them for one cent, the card's official introduction by the post office spurred a correspondence boom. Canadians were soon sending thousands of cards through the mail.
Known as the Kodak Folding Camera, it was discontinued in 1915, most likely because the camera proved bulky and expensive. The camera introduced by Kodak produced a postcard-size photograph that was ready to be written on, addressed and mailed. Besides 1871, the year Canada issued the pre-stamped, pictureless postcard, deltiologists recognize other major milestones. In 1895, new post office regulations allowed the sending of “private mailing cards” — cards made by printers other than the post office.
