The four-sided clock produced by the McClintock-Loomis Co. in the early 1900s resembles one affixed to the city-owned Municipal Plaza Building, which was constructed in 1922 for Frost Bank.
Charlie Blalock/ ContributorA clock that was once an eye-catching architectural feature in downtown San Antonio in the early 1900s has returned to its old spot on the historic Rand Building.
in its old location on the eight-story Rand Building , 110 E. Houston St., by Weston Urban, which now owns the building, according to the San Antonio Report. The Rand Building now houses Geekdom, a for-profit coworking space for startups, with the Double Standard tavern and restaurant on its first floor. Built in 1913 for Wolff & Marx Co. department store, it was originally envisioned as a 15-story structure on a downtown block purchased in 1910 by a syndicate led by Ed Rand. Its design was downsized to seven stories, with an eighth floor soon added, and it was called the Houston Building.
After Wolff & Marx closed in 1965, the store sold the clock in 1969 to redevelop the high-rise, which became known as the Rand Building. The clock was moved to a bar on the North Side and used as ornamentation for a billiards club. Weston Urban found and purchased it in 2021 for restoration and re-installation in its original location.
