To mark Hispanic Heritage Month - Sept. 15 through Oct. 15 - PennLive is showcasing residents from central Pennsylvania who represent the thriving and dynamic Latino community in the region.
Educators, elected officials, social advocates, business entrepreneurs, artists and writers, the men and women featured, embody the contributions of Latinos and the cultural legacy that informs their work and identity.
Our Hispanic community isn’t just made up of one Spanish-speaking country, it’s multicultural. Within our City, a rich blend of cultures and traditions has seamlessly integrated, with influences from places such as Puerto Rico, Cuba, Mexico, Costa Rica, and other Spanish-speaking countries. Dr. Sarah Ramirez is at the medical group location in Harrisburg. Aug. 31, 2023. Jimmie Brown | [email protected]. Sarah Ramirez was born in the Dominican Republic, and even after moving to New Jersey as a young child, continued to speak only Spanish in school for several years.
“I try to educate my Latino [patients] and tell them ‘stop defending yourself’. It sounds better in Spanish, but it’s this idea of false fluency – they know the answers to the questions most commonly asked, but they don’t truly understand what’s happening. There is comfort in our language, especially for older Latinos.
