Teachers, administrators and parents say more needed than the $6.5 billion the province budgeted for the K\u002D12 education system.

“Recruitment and retention is a big issue across the province right now,” said Carolyn Broady, president of the B.C. School Trustees Association. “The great retirement came out of the pandemic and we have been unable to replace them.”

There is good news in the budget, such as $2 billion to meet the increased wages negotiated last year so it doesn’t fall on school boards to find the extra money; $3.4 billion for capital investment in areas that need new schools and seismic upgrades; $214 million for school food programs; and $161 million for the classroom enhancement fund for hiring more in-classroom support, another contractual obligation, say Johnston and Broady.

“Eighty-seven per cent of our budgets goes to salaries and benefits, and there is not enough left for technology, hydro bills, transportation, building transportation, and all those extra expenses,” she said. “All of that has to come out of the remaining 13 per cent.”
