“You break a record, and you get a message from the 1975 team, saying hey — congratulations.”

“You break a record, and you get a message from the 1975 team, saying hey — congratulations,” says Hillis, who received a call from ex-Huskie Larry Giles after he broke his 42-year-old team record for most career receiving touchdowns. We deliver the local news you need in these turbulent times on weekdays at 3 p.m.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.

“When you’ve got a guy like Mitch around, you wish he had one more year, one more year, one more year,” Huskies’ head coach Scott Flory says of Hillis, a B.C. Lions draftee who is playing out his fifth and final collegiate season. “You know how special a player he is, how much he means to this football team, how much potential he has and has shown. His growth, since I’ve been here the last four years, is phenomenal. And someday, he’ll embark on a professional career, if that’s of his choosing.

“We’ve talked about how we need to win out, and keep it in our own hands,” Hillis says. “We don’t want to leave it in somebody else’s hands. The Huskies won their first two games this season, but have since dropped four straight for the first time since 2000. A fourth-quarter comeback fell short this past Saturday at Griffiths Stadium, and they lost 29-25 to British Columbia.
