The Half Dome hikers in Yosemite suffered singed hair, charred clothing and memory loss.

On Sept. 21, hikers Jordan Dean and Josh Van Dyke had reached the Half Dome summit when a lightning storm picked up, according to theThere are metal cables for the last 400 feet of the Half Dome climb. As the storm rolled through, the hike down the cable portion became congested. Dean and Van Dyke decided to wait out the storm at the top, Dean told the Chronicle.

The two hikers, along with others, took refuge in a cave to wait out the congestion and storm. The rocks of the cave were struck by the lightning and from there it hit Dean’s knee, while another person was hit in the back of the head. A man in the cave fell unconscious and the hikers tried to help resuscitate him.

“He hunched over, then his body went limp, and he fell to the side,” Dean told The Chronicle. “We were yelling for him to wake up, and was trying to shake him and then checked for a pulse.”After about a half hour, the rain subsided. The group decided to leave the cave but would still have to make it down in still-hazardous conditions while suffering effects such as singed hair, charred clothing and even memory loss. A woman had slipped earlier and was later rescued by helicopter.
