📈 The Kraken subvariant of Covid is spreading so fast that it is likely to become the dominant strain in the UK by the end of the month, analysis shows

The Kraken subvariant of Covid is spreading so fast that it is likely to become the dominant strain in the UK by the end of the month,It was first identified in the UK in December and grew rapidly to account for 11 per cent of new infections on 21 January, according toThe subvariant, officially known as XBB.1.

“XBB.1.5 is already dominant on the US east coast and is projected to become so in the rest of the United States by mid February,” he said. “A doubling per week compared to the average of circulating variants is still remarkable and on the order of Delta vs Alpha,” he said at the time. Professor Altmann added: “We’re by now very used to seeing the fairly rapid sweep of sub-variants as they take-over. We continue to be in uncharted territory but the patterns are becoming ever harder to predict.

Steve Griffin, a virologist at Leeds University, said: “The worry with XBB1.5 is that it has both the transmissibility advantage as well as antibody evasiveness. So we may see rapid spread among another newly susceptible tranche of the population. “While thankfully the frequent mini-waves we are seeing now do not have the same acute impacts of early waves there is still a cumulative strain to health services over time as well as a considerable amount of burden to public health, including due to long Covid, and to the economy, through Covid related work sickness.”
