And by closure, we mean explaining why the character, played by Lucas Grabeel, wasn't openly gay in the movie franchise., Kenny opened up about queer representation and the queer aesthetic in his past works and was quick to cite Ryan as a prime example.

Well, 14 years later Kenny has finally taken the opportunity to shed some light on Ryan’s backstory and his reasoning to omit that. “We decided he [was] probably going to come out in college. It was less about coming out and just more about letting his true colors come forward,” the director said.
