The Department of Health and Human Services' Office for Civil Rights (HHS-OCR) is investigating the Cleveland Clinic over two programs, the 'Minority Stroke Program' and the 'Minority Men's Health Center,' accused of discriminating against patients based on race. The investigation follows a complaint filed by Do No Harm, an organization advocating for medical non-discrimination.
The Department of Health and Human Services's Office for Civil Rights has launched an investigation into the Cleveland Clinic over programs allegedly providing medical services to minority populations, it HHS-OCR wrote in a Sept. 10 letter that it was investigating the clinic’s "Minority Stroke Program," which has a stated purpose of preventing and treating strokes in racial and ethnic minorities. It will also probe the clinic's "Minority Men's Health Center.
The organization claimed that both the "Minority Stroke Program" and the "Minority Men's Health Center" have violated protections by the Civil Rights Act and Affordable Care Act against discrimination. Website links for the "Minority Men's Health Center" cited in the complaint direct to a page for the Cleveland Clinic's Glickman Urological & Kidney Institute. A spokesperson for the Cleveland Clinic told The National Desk that the clinic "removed the Minority Men's Health Center page from our website because the center has not been in place for several years."
The Cleveland Clinic has excluded some people from its care by limiting stroke treatment to minority groups, according to the complaint.
