New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone revealed on Sunday that he met with general manager Brian Cashman and owner Hal Steinbrenner a few days ago, discussing the state of this disappointing team.
What else do the Yankees have to lose? Even if those youngsters don’t perform well in pinstripes, a postseason bid is probably out of the question at this point. A promotion will either be a valuable learning experience for those kids, a success that translates to wins or an opportunity to showcase their talent to other clubs with future trades in play. Thinking ahead to next spring, those three prospects will be competing for a role on the active roster if they can continue to develop.
The trio can look ahead to next winter as well. Torres will be a free agent after the 2024 campaign. If the Yankees don’t plan to extend the second baseman, this offseason is the time to trade him away, capitalizing on a boost in value after his strong season. The Yankees may also consider selling high on some relievers if they want to flip MLB talent to fill a hole elsewhere on their roster.
That’s validation for Boone, Cashman and Steinbrenner, a group that stuck with their top prospect over the last few years rather than signing one of the other big-name shortstops in free agency. Other than Corey Seager, they really didn’t miss out on anybody at the position, dodging a few bullets.
