Help Our Neighborhood Restaurants: Lexington Pizza Parlour is delivering for New York hospitals

Devigne has taken an unusual path to this unlikely reality. Born in France, he got his start in the U.S. as a waiter—and, later, owner—of Pescatore in Hell’s Kitchen. A Netflix documentary calleddetails his very New York story: how a Frenchman became a self-taught purveyor of Italian cuisine.

“The joke I always say is, ‘They were hiring,’” Devigne explains. “With under $100 in my bank account, I decided I needed to get a job pronto.” LPP was founded in the early 2010s, and Devigne took over in 2015 after moving to the neighborhood to be closer to his children’s schools, luring customers with homemade risotto and ravioli as well as its titular dough-based deliciousness. During the day, his restaurant focused on pizza and other casual fare; by night, it became a sit-down spot with an added array of specials from oven roasted whole branzino to herb encrusted pork chop.

After the coronavirus outbreak, Devigne shifted LPP to takeout and delivery, managing to retain much of his staff as local relief organizations sent over charitable New Yorkers eager to purchase meals for medical personnel. Now customers plunk down $300 at a time to dispatch food to the city’s front lines, with Devigne personally driving pies to hospitals from Columbia in Washington Heights to Mount Sinai West in midtown.

“The city really in all forms comes through in moments like this,” he says. “I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else and doing anything else.” from Baby Field Greens Salad to Grilled Aged Hangar Steak
