Sophomore possesses determination, and long legs
Watching Helix High sophomore Laraigh Allen sprint is like watching Jamaica’s Usain Bolt in his early days.Tall for a sprinter, Bolt would finally shift to high gear about halfway through a race, often too late to catch world-class sprinters who virtually explode out of the starting blocks.
Running into a stiff 1.9-meter-per-second wind, Allen still clocked 12.18, which bettered her season best by a scant hundredth of a second. Improving at all under those conditions was amazing, as the rest of the field, led by runner-up Bean at 12.46, also felt the effects of running into a breeze. “I was hoping to get under 12 seconds,” said the bespectacled 15-year-old, who earlier in the meet anchored the victorious 4x100 relay team in 49.69. That was still behind the 49.08 they ran the week before at the Meb Keflezighi Invitational.
“In youth track I lost all the time,” said Allen, whose hero is seven-time Olympic champion Allyson Felix. “That fueled me to get better. I worked really hard, and now I try to beat everyone.” “My opponents are only human and I’m human, too. I try to run my race and not focus on the others — just myself. Running as fast as I can, I try to own the race.”
