Helix's 47-year-old coach wants to watch daughter Taylor compete: 'I'll be in stands rooting. I'll be a huge Highlanders fan.'
Cole Holland, one of the most-respected high school baseball coaches in San Diego County, is walking away from Helix after 23 seasons, 359 wins and a CIF championship.
“It was time,” said Holland, 47. “I’m not saying this is a forever-decision because who knows what will happen down the road. “But my daughter is a junior, three-sport athlete at Helix, and I want to see her play. I’ve given this a lot of thought, and you can’t get the time back with family. So I’ll be in the stands rooting. I’ll be a huge Highlanders fan.”Taylor Holland plays volleyball, soccer and beach volleyball at Helix. Little sister Bailey is a sixth grader and also is involved.Helix’s baseball team was 9-18 this season, but Holland said that had nothing to do with his decision.
“We graduated a lot of seniors from the 2022 team, and I knew this year would be a rebuilding process,” Holland said. “I didn’t think it would be fair to step aside and leave a new man with a young team. “I’m healthy, I have great assistant coaches, the parents have been great and Helix has a great administration.Holland’s record at Helix is 359-286-2. The Highlanders were 25-9 in 2011, beating Steele Canyon for the San Diego Section Division II title.Helix athletic director Damon Chase, whose son Keaton played for Holland, said the school is working on a plan to replace the coach.
