'Most of the country' will not be open by May 1, surgeon general says
Surgeon General Jerome Adams acknowledged Friday most Americans will not be able to resume their normal lives on May 1, when the Trump administration's guidelines aimed at countering the spread of the coronavirus in the United States are set to expire.
"Most of the country will not, to be honest with you, but some will," he continued,"And that's how we'll reopen the country: place by place, bit by bit, based on the data." But his most recent comments Friday represent a more conspicuous break with other senior administration officials who have been increasingly outspoken regarding their desire to reopen the U.S. economy as it tumbles further into recession and notches historic unemployment numbers.
"Hopefully, we're going to be opening up ... very, very, very, very soon, I hope," Trump said Thursday at the daily White House coronavirus briefing. Fauci has previously warned the coronavirus could reemerge in the fall as a"seasonal, cyclic" threat. "Obviously, if we're going to try to get this nation back to work shortly after the end of this month, we're far along in those planning processes, as we speak," he said.
