Freedman had come to doubt a date in the 20th-century politician’s own memoir, he recounted in a recent interview, one that dealt with the loss of Humphrey’s childhood home amid the agricultural collapse of 1920s South Dakota. While a copy of the mortgage and newspaper ad of the time corroborated Freedman’s timeline rather than Humphrey’s, the author wanted more evidence if he was going to contradict a man’s account of his own life.
