The standout aspect of the Skate Kitchen spinoff is its cast. (Warning: This review contains spoilers for Season 1 of HBO's Betty.)
, which followed real-life New York skate collective The Skate Kitchen,'s simple premise—girls can skate too, okay?—is anchored by its notably strong cast. The five stars ofare predominantly women of color, several of them queer, but the show engages these realities naturalistically: Shy documentarian Honeybear 's romance with an alluring fellow skater girl is treated as just that: a romance, with realistic ups and downs, rather than a teaching moment for the audience about queer love.
Similarly, Kirt 's cluelessness as to why her friends Honeybear, Janay , and Camille are mad that they got arrested and she didn't after a vandalism incident—she's white, they're not—rings sincere, rather than Very Special Episode-y. Kirt's path from sullen non-apology to genuine contrition feels earned, and watching the girls welcome her back to the safe circle of their friendship is almost tear-inducing .
Camille is also preoccupied with a boy—fellow skater Bambi , whose hot-and-cold treatment of Camille is, as the kids say, "too real"—for much of the season, but her crush doesn't make her any less serious about skating. Vinberg herself has been skating since she was 12, and calls it "almost like a meditation, because in that moment, all of your focus is on landing a trick.
was cool, but when I met Nina, she was like, 'You wanna skate?' Then one day she called me and said, 'Where are you? Don’t move,' and came to me five minutes later with a full board setup and was like, 'Now you can’t say you can’t skate,'" recalled Russell.cast aligns on much, but right now, they have different views on skating during lockdown.
