Harris County Republicans had high hopes for Election Day after a massive spending campaign. In the end, they mostly fell short.

Incumbent Harris Co. Judge Lina Hidalgo speaks to the crowd at the Election Night Watch Party hosted by the Harris Co. Democratic Party held at Chapman and Kirby Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2022 in Houston, TX.to expand their majority on Commissioners Court with narrow victories in three marquee local races.

Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo and Precinct 2 Commissioner Adrian Garcia won re-election campaigns by 1.5 and 5 percentage points, respectively, according to the unofficial vote tallies. And Democratic challenger Lesley Briones was set to unseat Precinct 4 Commissioner Jack Cagle by 3.3 points. Harris County Commissioner Pct. 4 candidate Lesley Briones talks with supporters at her watch party at Cottonwood on N. Shepherd Tuesday Nov. 08,2022.The current Democratic majority on Commissioner Court sought to draw Cagle out of office by making his precinct more Democratic-friendly. He nearly defied the odds by hanging onto a seat with a 12-point Democratic advantage, according to past election results.

Democrats were headed for victory in nearly all of the lower-ball judicial races as well, but Republicans claimed five benches. Those would mark the first countywide GOP victories since Democrats first swept the courthouse in 2016. The leading GOP candidates are: Tami Pierce, 180th Criminal District Court; Kristin Guiney, 183rd Criminal District Court; Paula Goodhart, County Court at Law No. 2; Leslie Johnson, County Court at Law No. 3; and Jessica Padilla, County Court at Law No. 14.Republican Harris County Judge candidate Alexandra del Moral Mealer gets ready to talk to the media as early election results come in at her watch party at Kirby Ice House on Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2022 in Houston.
