San Antonio native Arysia Porter is one of six women on the roster of the world-famous Harlem Globetrotters.
is one of six female players on the team’s roster, the most in their history. Before Halloween, she flew to Atlanta for a tryout. After running through a battery of drills and an interview, she made the team. Her mother cried with joy. Her father said the Globetrotters was perfect for her.
Lessons learned playing for her high school coach play a big part in her story. Roosevelt basketball coach Robert Rheinberger knew she was a leader when Porter walked into his camp in the seventh grade. He recalled she showed up each day smiling, ready to practice, play and compete. “Everything she’s getting is from hard work and a will to be as successful as she possibly can,” Rheinberger said. “I’m really hard on our kids because this is more than basketball. This is about making these young women able to be whatever they want to be.”
