The managing partner at Nicholls and Nicholls law firm said: “It’s quite hypocritical really, isn’t it? Especially when behind the scenes, ministers were casually flouting the regulations that they were putting in place.

One of Ms Nicholls clients, Alex Lowndes, the owner of Gainz Fitness gym in Bedford, faced a £10,000 fine for breaching Covid-19 rules during the second lockdown in 2020.

Former student Xenon Watts, who was fined £10,000 for organising a snowball fight during lockdown in January 2021,The 24-year-old, who was studying at the University of Leeds at the time, claimed he made a Facebook event for a snowball fight “as a joke” which he deleted a couple of hours later. But within a few hours, there were hundreds of people in Hyde Park, Leeds.

Jessica Allen and her friend Eliza Moore made the headlines after being fined £200 by police for meeting for what they understood to be a socially distanced walk in January 2021. Police later rescinded the penalty charges and apologised to the friends. He said: “There were certainly circumstances where the police were wrong. They applied the law, the regulations and the guidance in the wrong manner. And people suffered as a result of that.”that there was a “training issue” within police forces as the laws were brought in “extremely quickly without any debate in Parliament”.
