Professor says higher pay is part of the solution
Halifax Transit recruitment woes continue. Bus routes were dropped this week to help ease forced overtime hours and driver burnout. - TIM KROCHAKHalifax’s transit system could soon get a whole lot worse.
He says 14 have already quit this year because of low wages and working conditions. Drivers are not getting fair compensation, he said, and roughly 100 of them are ready to walk off the job unless they get a raise. The union’s contract expired in 2021 and negotiations continue for a new collective agreement. The city says it’s been recruiting and training new operators and that it needs 80 more to restore bus service to standard levels. A city spokesperson said it plans to recruit enough drivers to return to regular service levels by late this summer. The city won’t discuss contract negotiations until a deal is finalized.
“Is the shortage happening just because wages are low or are the requirements to apply restricting new drivers?” said Akbari. Either way, the city’s population growth means the transit system needs to expand, not shrink, says the professor. Halifax is growing at a rate of 10,000 people a year and the province welcomed a record number of immigrants in 2022.
