But at least in Canada’s largest city the plastics ban is still voluntary. It’s up to individual businesses.
My home city, Edmonton, on the other hand, is leading the nation in banning single-use plastics and takeout containers. I’m pretty sure the next time I order soup or oatmeal to go, I’m going to be instructed to cup my hands together so the server can ladle in my order.
I shall attempt to restrain myself the next time some eco-hip fast-food cashier sneers that this would all be so much easier if I had simply remembered to bring my own reusable takeaway dish. But because we won’t tackle a real problem, that means bans on disposable soup bowls and plastic utensils are nothing more than hollow gestures to appease the consciences of progressives.
