Yet the problem with any cabinet is that it’s only as good as the person picking the ministers. Remember, it was Trudeau who, less than two years ago, picked all of the ministers he let go on Wednesday. If they turned out to be incompetent, that’s on him. He doesn’t have the greatest eye for talent.For one thing, this shuffle makes the regional imbalance in cabinet even worse. Five of the new ministers represent constituencies in Ontario, only one each come from British Columbia and Quebec.
Alberta has only one member of cabinet. And it has a Liberal MP not already in cabinet, George Chahal from Calgary Skyview. You might think with Trudeau’s obsession with gender and ethnic balance among ministers he might also place a premium on the country’s regions being equitably represented, but you’d be wrong.
So it can’t be that Trudeau’s morals are keeping Alberta from acquiring another minister. Must be that Trudeau doesn’t care whether we’re represented or not. Alberta’s only cabinet minister, Edmonton Centre MP Randy Boissonnault, was moved from tourism to employment workforce development and official languages.
