Bill C\u002D21 would increase penalties for certain gun offences, but nobody convicted of them between 2016 and 2021 received the maximum penalty

In his question, Chambers requested data on how many offenders received the maximum sentence for gun crimes affected by the increased maximum sentencing penalties in Bill C-21.The busiest of the last five fiscal years for the crimes in question, 2018–19, saw 95 convictions.

Simon Fraser University criminologist Gary Mauser said it’s difficult to find any cases where offenders of any crime were handed maximum sentences.
