The G’s checked a lot of boxes with the win. Their fifth straight victory maintained at least a three-game lead over Chicago and a five-game lead over the Twins in the AL Central.
CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Guardians located lefty Kirk McCarty in the lost-and-found department in their bullpen just in time.
“Kirk sat for a while,” said manager Terry Francona. “But he came in and pumped strikes and helped us win a ballgame ... a big ballgame.It took a while for the Guardians to reach lefty Jose Suarez , but they finally made contract in the sixth. McCarty relieved Morris with two out in the fourth. He allowed one hit and struck out one. It was his third straight win in the role of bulk reliever. He beat Boston and Tampa Bay in similar fashion earlier in the season.
“I was very adamant about not making that an excuse,” said McCarty. “If I went 10, 12, 13 days , I’m here to do a job. If I go a week before I throw, that’s what I’m going to prepare myself to do.” It was Maile’s first sac-fly of the season and the 45th by the Guardians as a team. They lead the AL in that category and rank second to the Dodgers in the big leagues.
