GTA resident Domenico Cugliari has been deported to Italy after Canadian authorities successfully argued that he is an active member of the ’Ndrangheta, a global Mafia strain originating in southern Italy.
Cugliari was deported on Tuesday after losing a federal court appeal, his lawyer Ronald Poulton said in an email.
“He was not in custody in Canada,” Poulton said in an email. “His Canadian wife supported him while he was here.” “By way of background, the undisputed evidence … confirms that ’Ndrangheta is among the richest and most powerful organized crime groups at a global level,” the federal court decision states.
Canadian authorities argued Cugliari is a member of the Sant’Onofrio Locale, which is headed by the Bonavota family. It noted that three members of the Bonavota family have been found guilty of murder by Italian courts. Cugliari’s criminal record includes a July 2016 conviction in Italy for illegally cultivating around 800 cannabis plants.
