, former vice president and environmentalist Al Gore’s praise bordered on fandom: “Greta Thunberg personally embodies the moral authority of the global youth activist movement that is rightly demanding that we act immediately to start solving the climate crisis.
The news is grim, but the response is grimmer: With Donald Trump in the White House, the United States has signaled its intent to pull out of the Paris Agreement, an international compact signed with the support of more than 190 countries in 2015.
She knows that most people don’t think in quite the same stark terms that she does, but on this point she can’t compromise. We have so little margin for error, and this is how she sees it: “We have this crisis, and either you listen to the science and accept this problem, or you don’t. Either you act on the crisis in line with the science, or you don’t.”
Thunberg is much too circumspect to propose just one reason for that gender breakdown, although she has her theories. But Anuna de Wever, 18, who is Thunberg’s counterpart in Belgium, has an idea. When she first started to make short videos about the environment, she couldn’t convince her male friends to join her. It struck them as “uncool.” But girls lined up behind her.
