After more than two decades, St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Lower Manhattan has reopened to the public for the first time since the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
The first liturgy service on Dec. 6, 2022, celebrated the Feast of St. Nicholas, the Associated Press reported.
"Today is a joyous day for America and for New York," Michael Psaros, chair of Friends of St. Nicholas, told the AP. St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, right, sits next to ground zero in New York City on Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2022. The goal was to reopen the church before the 20th anniversary of the attacks in 2021 after construction resumed in 2020 — but this goal was not met. This would become one of the first stops for many Greeks immigrants after their disposition from Ellis Island.The historic church witnessed decades of growth in Lower Manhattan’s financial district — and stood its ground during the construction of the World Trade Center in the 1960s.
