The trustees’ actions could foreshadow the types of moves to come in other districts as conservative groups target school board seats, backed by big money.
The Grapevine-Colleyville ISD sign is pictured before Mustang Panther Stadium in Grapevine, Texas, Tuesday, June 23, 2020. Students’ access to information on race and gender would be restricted in Grapevine-Colleyville under a controversial proposal that would also label any material addressing human sexuality as “potentially pornographic.”
The trustees’ actions could foreshadow the types of moves to come in other districts as conservative groups target school board seats,. The direction of GCISD – along with dozens of others – could be swayed for years by the results of the May 7 elections. Already, critical race theory fights have factored into the recent races in the district.
The board did not vote on the proposal during their lengthy meeting. Instead, board president Jorge Rodríguez said the draft policy will go before a committee of trustees, administrators and lawyers who will later make a recommendation on it to the full board. But the two trustees’ proposal goes further than state law by explicitly stating that no district curriculum can include critical race theory.that probes the way policies and laws uphold systemic racism. More recently, Republican pundits have conflated schools’ diversity and equity work -- such as anti-racism training and multicultural curricula -- with the theory, turning it into something of a catchall.
Withholding gender-affirming medical treatment from adolescents risks psychological distress and increased chances of abuse and stigmatization, according to the state and nation’s most prominent child welfare and medical groups. Employees who violated the policy could be punished by withholding pay or with termination, under the draft policy.
