The Grant Park Music Festival announced its 2022 season, slated to run from June 15 to Aug. 20.

“Every time I rave about the festival, I talk about the things that nobody knows, the world premieres no one has heard yet. But there are also the things that know — the Russian Easter Festival Overture , the Korngold Violin Concerto, stuff like that.”

That’s in addition to a festival co-commission of a new flute concerto by Christopher Theofinidis, performed by Marina Piccinini , and a bevy of other new works premiered by guest artists. Pianists Eva-Maria Zimmermann and Keisuke Nakagoshi, who perform together as ZOFO, present a work composed for them by Australian composer Carl Vine on June 22. Later, husband-wife team Piccinini and Andreas Haefliger unveil new works for flute and piano by John Harbison and Tebogo Monnakgotla in an Aug.

2022′s full-throttle season couldn’t come sooner for the Grant Park Chorus, which celebrates 60 years this summer and performed in especially abbreviated form last year. Choral director Christopher Bell marks the ensemble’s diamond anniversary with an all-choral program on Aug. 4, then closes out the festival Aug. 19-20 with its traditional choral-orchestral blowout, this time of Haydn’s “Creation” oratorio with soprano Janai Brugger, tenor Duke Kim, and bass Douglas Williams.

Kalmar is particularly eager to lead works that might be familiar to some concertgoers, but which he hasn’t led in several years to decades — like César Franck’s Symphony in D minor , Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 9 and Haydn’s “Creation,” which closes the season. That spirit of novelty and rediscovery has defined his 22-year tenure at Grant Park thus far — first as principal conductor in 2000, then as artistic director in 2011 — and it will also set the stage for his exit in 2024.
